Alone in the Dark
Highly acclaimed adventure game originally released for the PC. The game has a strong plot based on the work of H.P Lovecraft. The central character is a detective named Edward Carnby who is investigating a suicide. You can choose instead to play a female character named Emily Hartwood. The action takes place in a haunted mansion in Louisiana and a hellish world to which your character will be transported. Somewhat confusingly, the game of the same name released for the PSX. The gameplay is the same but the story involves the search for a child who has been kidnapped by a band of pirates. The games include themes that make it unsuitable for the younger gamer.
The games take place in detailed pre-rendered environments with 3D characters. The gameplay combines exploration, interacting with a cast of well developed NPCs, puzzle solving and combat.
The control system and interface are generally effective, although combat is challenging. The game boasts good design and reasonable graphics, although the game now looks pretty dated. Atmospheric audio accompanies play, sustaining tension well.
