Close Combat 3: The Russian Front
Strategy and wargaming. The game covers ground-based combat between Russia and Germany between 1941 and the end of the war.
The game incorporates several play modes; single scenarios, operations (a series of linked scenarios) or campaign mode. It is also possible to edit your own scenarios.
Campaign mode consists of a series of scenarios, which often involve the successful competition of a number of objectives and may cover several maps and several virtual days. The maps are much larger than in the previous games in the series.
When the game starts you control a small number of units. As you progress you gain promotion and control larger forces. An important addition to this game is that there are now varying qualities of troops (conscripts, standard, or elite forces). The game covers a variety of terrain, including forests, snow covered battlefields and cities.
A wide range of historically accurate weapons and unit type are incorporated into the game. As in the previous titles you can acquire new units and weapons by spending requisition points. They are accumulated on the basis of the level of success achieved. Another innovation in the AI is that the composition and status of your troops effect their behavior.
The control system has been refined for this title, making it easier to interpret the status of your units and group them quickly. Group numbering, drag selecting, and status bars above each unit have been added. It is also possible to adjust the depth of information conveyed in the single status bar that runs across the bottom of the screen.
You issue orders to you units by simply clicking on the mouse to bring up a menu of options. Among these are the new variants 'ambush' and 'defend' (which concentrates your forces fire on the most likely area of attack).
The automation of troop movements has been improved by the addition of a waypoint system so you can set your troops moving along a pre-determined series of paths in order to minimize the danger to them.
Aside from the main campaign and the pre-set self-contained scenarios there is a full scenario edit function. Here you can select a map, determine starting positions, force strength and compositions, select the duration of the battles and set victory locations as well as controlling other factors.
The game is played on photo-realistic terrain with smoothly animated units and does not employ 3D acceleration. The sound effects capture all the sound of the battle field.
Up to four players can participate in the multi-player game.
