Final Fantasy 8
RPG and part of a highly successful and long-running series of games. Available for PC and PlayStation. The most obvious improvement over the last game in the series is in the graphics. The previous cartoon-style graphics have been replaced by smoother and more subtle character and environment designs. It is set within a strong and engaging narrative with a sci-fi feel that is an important element of the game. As part of its development extensive use is made of high-quality FMV cutscenes.
You control a character named Squall Leonheart a trainee member of a special forces group. Along the way two other characters join your team. Also, for a significant section of the game, you will control an enemy soldier named Laguna Loire.
The game is viewed from a third-person partially over-head perspective which changes to a fixed zoomed-in view during combat. Combat remains essentially turn-based but the combat system has been improved. The control, and extensive menu systems, have also been refined.
An important addition to the gameplay is the system of 'Guardian Forces'. These are spirits who perform various powerful attacks. You collect them along the way, train them and they can be used in many combinations to perform amazing actions. They add significant breadth to the combat.
As in the previous games there are many puzzle elements and other diversions from the main action. One of these in this game is a card game which you can play with many of the NPCs that you meet along the way.
There are a large number of NPCs included and there is an extensive amount of dialogue.
In general this is a high quality game with superb graphics, characters, story and gameplay.
