Metal Gear Solid
This highly successful action/adventure game is available for PlayStation and PC. It is part of a series of games previously released on other formats.
You play a character called Solid Snake, a special forces agent (familiar from the earlier games in the series). His mission is to infiltrate and disrupt an enemy installation in Alaska. When the game begins he has little equipment at his disposal and must use stealth and skill to gain entry to the base and find additional equipment.
You view Snake from a slightly overhead third-person perspective and the camera system works well in this game. There are training levels to help you get to grips with the control system.
Snake has a good range of moves at his disposal and there are also numerous types of weapons to be found along the way. Another useful piece of equipment is the satellite link-up that keeps Snake in contact with his base and provides useful mission info.
Stealth plays an important part in the gameplay. The enemy AI is impressive, for instance they will notice your footprints in the snow and pursue you.
The game boasts a strong cast of characters including the six members of the terrorists' inner circle who will hunt you down using their own special skills.
The game employs excellent graphics and the action is interspersed with high-quality cutscenes. The audio is of a similarly high standard and includes an atmospheric musical sound track.
