Midtown Madness
Driving game set in a simplified simulation of the streets of Chicago. The city is rendered in detail, complete with the city's landmarks and a population going about its business. Different weather conditions also feature.
Gameplay consists of running, or rather driving, amok in the city streets, picking up the inevitable police cars in pursuit. You damage other cars and fixtures and can scatter, or even mow down, the pedestrians. Of course your own vehicle can also sustain damage, reducing its performance.
There is a wide choice of vehicles featured, including a VW Beetle, pick-up truck, a variety of hot-rods, a City bus and racing car. There are a number of views available, including first and third person views and a widescreen view. A real-time map is included to help you find your way around and determine quickest routes.
There are four modes of play; cruise mode, Blitz race, Checkpoint race, and Cops and Robbers. Up to 8 players can link up for racing or chasing action.
Cruise mode allows you to drive around the city creating whatever mayhem you like. In Blitz mode you have to reach all the checkpoints in a limited time. In Circuit mode you to have to reach the checkpoints in a section of the city while completing laps. Checkpoint races involve hitting all the checkpoints in the entire city. Cops and Robbers consists of simple chases.
The game employs the Monster Truck 2 engine. As a result the graphics are adequate if nothing special. The sound consists of rather non-descript music with commentary.
