Driver
Action driving game set in the 1970s. It features a selection of gas-guzzlers. The levels are set in Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York and the look of each is recreated.
You play Tanner, an undercover cop whose aim is to infiltrate the criminal underworld. You do this by performing a series of missions to ingratiate yourself with the crime bosses. Cutscenes intersperse the action and develop the story.
The missions cover a variety of tasks, such as being the getaway driver in a robbery and making pick-ups and deliveries within a time limit, whilst all the time staying ahead of the law enforcers. You get assignments as messages on you answering machine.
The game incorporates a Director mode, which allows you to edit together replays of your finest moments.
The game's boasts good 3D graphics, AI, vehicle physics and handling. There are realistic, but not gruesome, crashes.
The cities' streets are alive with people and cars. Traffic is to be avoided as far as possible, as it slows you down.
The handling of the cars is one of the game's strengths. It is easy to perform dramatic slides and take part in exciting high-speed chases. There is a map/scanner display in the corner of the screen to help you navigate and monitor police movements.
