Hybrid Heaven
Adventure game with RPG elements.
The action is set within a strong plot that unravels as you progress. The atmospheric sci-fi
plot is a great strength of the game. Extensive use is made of impressive cut-scenes.
At the most basic level, you play two characters, each at certain points of the game. One is
mysterious figure called Mr. Diaz and the other is John Slater. Slater has to take on the
Hybrids, a group bent on the destruction of ordinary humans. The Hybrids are a super race
who live in a huge subterranean complex, they have also infiltrated the government of the
human world above ground. There are many characters to interact with in-game. Dialogue
is displayed in text along the bottom of the screen.
Gameplay is a mixture of real-time and turn-based action. The control system combines
button- and menu- controlled actions. The system is quite complicated and potentially
frustrating in places. A powerup bar along the bottom allows you to effect high-powered
attacks. The camera is controlled using the C-buttons, although at points it can be difficult
to maintain a good view of the action.
As the game goes on you learn many new moves and improve your characters' stats, such
as strength and skill, the levels of which are displayed on a status
screen.
The game boasts good 3D graphics and visual effects. The sound effects and music are
excellent adding much of the spooky, sci-fi atmosphere to the game.
The multi-player options allows for two players to fight as a team or in a death-match. In
co-operative mode you are faced with waves of monsters in the 'Creature Battle'. It is
possible to transfer you developed character from the main game to the multi-player game,
via the Memory Pak.
