WCW Mayhem
Available for N64 and PlayStation.
This wrestling game offers many play options (Quick Start, Quest for the Best, Main
Event, Pay Per View Password and Global Option). The Main Event offers sub-categories
of bout types, such as tag-team, and the ability to choose your own settings. The multi-
player options allow for up to four people to compete. In -game action recreates the
excitement and variation of the sport. For instance, you can engage in two-on-one bouts
whilst being able to choose which of your two opponents is the focus of your attacks. You
can also taunt your opponent.
Some 60 wrestlers in total are incorporated, including the famous faces of the WCW.
There is also a character editor so you can design your own wrestler. There are also
multiple arenas and events that are familiar from the WCW television shows.
A notable feature of this game is the ability to take the action outside the ring. As well as
fighting ringside, bouts can continue in other locations such as the locker room. When this
happens the rules are suspended and you can use whatever comes to hand as a weapon to
defeat your opponent.
The game offers arcade-like play for faster action. There are many different moves
available with numerous special moves. The game includes protection from victory by
rapid repeated button pressing - you can reverse your opponents attack. Victory is
achieved by filling you momentum meter and performing a finishing move.
The game's graphics are generally good, Wrestlers themselves are well-rendered in full
3D and character animation is particularly good since extensive use has been made of
motion capture. There is also an excellent range of sound effects that accompany play,
including good crown response and a TV-style commentary.
