Star Trek TNG: Birth of the Federation
Multi-player, turn-based strategy game, with combat elements, set in the Star Trek universe.
There are five races or empires in this game, each of which is controlled by a human or AI player. They are the human-dominated Federation, the Klingons, the Romulans, the Ferengi and the Cardassians. You can determine the size of the map in which you play, if the empires are close together it takes less time before their interests conflict.
The game requires that you build up your empire by managing your resources. After exploration and colonization you have build up a balanced economy. Research and the development of technology is an important aspect of your empire's development. As the game progresses you must defend your empire, as well as attacking and sending spies into the empires of your enemies.
Diplomacy is an important aspect of the game and, impressively, the AI is up to the task of filling in for absent players during negotiations.
Combat can conducted in a 3D tactical mode or set for automatic resolution at the start of the game. Alliances can be made. With small planets this can often result in their joining of you empire.
Victory is attained by achieving domination over your rivals (you may do this with an ally). Alternatively, you can play vendetta mode where your aim is to destroy the empires of your two traditional enemies. The game incorporates a full map and tactical tutorial.
The control system is a simple system of windows activated by mouse-click. The games graphics are good but the game's strength is clearly the engrossing game-play.
