Theocracy: Rise of the Aztec Empire
Strategy/wargame set in Mexico in the 15th and 16th Centuries. You select one of 42 Aztec tribes and try to unite all the tribes and defeat the Spanish conquistadors. The game has an open structure and there are no set missions. There is a strong story, largely developed through high-quality cutscenes that are triggered when you reach certain points in the development of your tribe.
You develop your tribe by deciding what new members are to become. A good feature is that you can control this at an individual level, or choose to set the number of members of each group you want, freeing you up to concentrate on other aspects of the game. You'll need to provide food sources and train your military force. Diplomacy pays an important part and you can form alliances with neighboring tribes, as well as conquer them. In addition, it also necessary to secure trade routes and develop new technology. Warriors gain experience as the game progresses, becoming more powerful and useful to your side.
The game combines real-time and turn-based systems. Using the good menu system you issue instructions and can then move time on until you wish to make further changes. Combat is played out in real-time, or you can get the computer to work out the results of conflicts. Played mostly on an isometrically-viewed landscape, the game offers four different views to help you keep track of the action, these include an overview of the map and a zoomed-in view. The game incorporates good help and tutorial functions. As well as the single-player game, there is a multi-player option for games via LAN or on-line.
