Thief: The Dark Project
First-person action adventure game. You play a thief named Garrett. The game consists of a series of well-designed missions. Objectives include stealing particular items, or performing rescue missions etc. Settings include castles, ruins, towns and caves.
Stealth is a crucial element in the game, although Garrett does have a few weapons. You must stick to the shadows of you are to succeed. A visibility display shows how obvious Garrett is at any given time. There is a good degree of realism in the behavior and response of guards, monsters and other NPCs the game effectively creates an atmosphere. Further realism is achieved by the implementation of 'real-world physics', thus objects can be handled and used in a more realistic way. In addition, materials play and important part, for instance tiled floors make a significant amount of noise.
The game's graphics, AI, audio and control system are good.
The game offers a great degree of subtlety - for instance if a guard hears or sees something momentarily, and you do not make any further mistakes he will shrug it off.
To help you navigate Garrett has a map for each level, however there's a catch - in some cases the maps lack a lot of detail. On-screen displays show his status, including health, weapons status etc. Stylish cutscenes are employed to provide the mission briefing and to further the overall narrative.
Garrett's weapons include a sword and a bow. Arrows come in many varieties including, for instance, water arrows that distinguish lamps. Equipment can be purchased with your ill-gotten gains but does not carry over from mission to mission. Due to the fairly weak weapons Garrett will often perish if it comes to an all out fight, so even when NPCs are alerted to his presence damage limitation is in order.
The game's graphics are good and environment design detailed. The sound effects play a very important part, since it is the level of these that helps determine the degree of enemy interest in your movements. The sound effects are excellent and lots of dialogue is included.
