Starcraft
Real-time strategy game. Closely associated with the WarCraft series, this game is instead set in space. There are three races to play, the Terrans (humans), Zerg (mutants) and Protoss (a highly intelligent species). Each have their own philosophy and unit-types
The game consists of tactical combat, resource management and technological development (through research). Missions objectives include performing rescues, infiltrating enemy bases or surviving an attack for a set length of time
The main single-player game is campaign mode, with missions that require you to master each of the races. There are also missions for single- or multi-player games (for up to eight players over LAN or Net). The game features a comprehensive campaign editor.
The game also employs easy-to-use menus and there is a new waypoint system. The game is played on a basically 2D landscape. However, elevation is taken into account, making the terrain more 3D in practice.
The campaign editor allows you to design maps, set cause and effect actions and victory conditions.
There are many unit types in play, from the more mundane to high-tech units, such as the aerial battlecruiser. You control your units using a mouse to move and group them.
The game's graphics engine may not be state-of-the-art, but the graphics are generally colorful, and the terrain and units well designed. Play is accompanied by a good range of fitting sound effects and an ambient musical soundtrack. The game employs effective AI to make the single player game a real challenge.
