Freespace 2
Space combat game. Set in the year 2367, some 30 years after the original game, during a war involving the humans (Terrans) and the Shivans. A third race, the Vasudans also feature.
The game offers a single-player campaign, multi-player option and full mission editor. The campaign mode is divided into a series of missions and has a strong plot developed through briefings and cutscenes. Mission objectives and the size of battles vary.
You lead a small group of ships against the aliens. Depending on the mission you'll fly one of a selection of aircraft from small fighters to battle cruisers. In the later missions you'll be participating in some truly spectacular battles involving a large number of ships. Capital ships play an important part in the action adding an epic feeling to the game. A good feature of the campaign is that having failed a mission five times you can access the next mission.
In multi-player mode up to 16 can participate on-line or over a network. The mission editor adds further longevity to the game allowing you to set up your own battle scenarios.
An extensive range of ships, weapons and space conditions are included in the game. A comprehensive graphical encyclopedia is on hand to provide information about the hardware and story of the game.
The game employs an effective interface and a HUD provides a large amount of information clearly. The control system is complex due the huge number of commands but it is customizable. You can even import a pilot picture in multi-player mode.
The game employs spectacular 3D graphics and visual effects. Nebulas are particularly well rendered. Good sound effects, music and voice-acting are incorporated.
