Blue Stinger
Adventure game. The game takes place in the near future. An island has appeared at the impact site of the asteroid that hit earth and caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. Mysterious events on the island have led the characters you control to investigate. You'll encounter many strange monsters along the way and the game incorporates aspects drawn from the horror genre. Extensive use is made of cut-scenes to develop the story.
You must explore the island. It is divided into eight areas. The game incorporates a map function to help you keep track of your progress.
There are two main human characters that you control. In addition, an entity of pure energy (called Nefilim) also features. Each has their own abilities. Nefilim has the ability to take on the form of other characters, and can even emulate their abilities. You switch control from one character to another.
The gameplay consists primarily of basic shoot 'em up action with puzzle elements that mostly involve finding door switches etc.
You have a range of weapons at your disposal; guns and ammo must be picked up along the way. A nice touch to the gameplay is the vending machines that are scattered around in-game. Corpses provide the cash and the machines vend useful equipment.
The camera system has been improved since the Japanese original was released.
The graphics are generally good, consisting of a mixture flat untextured areas and detailed textures, with some good light effects. The game's developers engaged the services of the Hollywood designers Robert Short (for character design, he worked on movies including Bettlejuice) and Pete Von Sholley (for background design, he worked on movies such as The Mask and Mars Attacks).
The full-orchestral soundtrack is a notable feature of the game, it does much to add to the atmosphere. An excellent range of sound effects are also incorporated. The voice-acting that appears in the cut-scenes is of more variable quality.
